The "Hot Hole" Lake Keowee
Seeking a unique dive location you can enjoy year round? Look no further than The Hot Hole in Lake Keowee, SC. Just an hour-and-a-half drive from Atlanta and nestled in a cove on the shores of Duke Power’s Oconee Nuclear Generating Station, this location is perfect for winter diving because hot water used to cool the reactor rushes into the lake, raising the mid-winter water temperature to 80 degrees.

We venture off to Lake Keowee at least once a year to dive in the famous "Hot Hole". Even when the weather is not perfect outside, the water is a perfect 80 degrees due to the water output from the power plant. This dive offers warm water and is performed as a drift dive due to the swift outflow from the waters in the power plant.
Lake Keowee is the third lake in succession of lakes built by Duke Power Co. Keowee has Visibility that ranges from 8 feet to 30 feet dependant on season and weather. Unique drift diving in a lake environment provided by the power plant and a three story building in 80 feet of water offers training locations not expected in a lake. A surface marker is required due to the swift flow.
